For the past few months I’ve been getting by with a cross-platform plugin for FireFox called ScreenGrab. It was slow and could run out of memory on long pages. I was happy to receive an automatic update to the latest ScreenGrab version 0.9.3. It uses the Gecko rendering engine for capturing web pages, making it much faster than the prior Java implementation. You can capture the view port, a selection, or the entire page with a right-click in FireFox.

I use Snapz Pro X for most of my screen capture needs (works like a charm for motion screen capture) but when I need to save a full browser screen as a PNG there is no substitute for ScreenGrab. Yes, I’ve tried Paparazzi but you can’t browse with and that is very inconvenient. This is a show stopper for me because with modern web pages there are, sadly, many states you can’t preserve in a URI. This makes Paparazzi blind to many things I need in my screen captures.

The view is facing southwest and if the marine layer wasn’t there you would be able to see Coronado, downtown San Diego, and Point Loma. I didn’t have my tripod with me and since HDR reqires multiple exposures I had to lay on top of this rock to keep the images as aligned.

I vaguely recall reading about the concept of wifi mobile phones but this is the first I’ve heard of something materializing.

This device could work great in cities with public Wi-Fi coverage. Especially for traveling abroad. I imagine it being more practical around the home on one’s personal wireless network. Depending on the cost the savings potential is huge for a person making frequent international calls. In the mean time I’ll stick with my Packet8 internet phone (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Accessibility is really quite easy and inexpensive if you simply commit up front to adhering to reasonable accessibility standards. The argument that it is too expensive just doesn’t fly anymore. Granted, if you built a large scale site with no intention of supporting accessibility a retrofit could cause a budget overrun. When you consider that SEO is an integral part of any marketing strategy and that search engines are essentialy “blind” users the resistance to accessibility simply doesn’t make any business sense.

updated 20060309: My Kultured friend Geoffrey sent me a link to a music video featuring some curiously talented robot dancers. Looks like some post production trickery to me but I have know idea how they did that. Perhaps Alaina might know, I should ask her.
