That’s Pep!

It’s amazing how you can listen to the same music for years and then suddenly hear the lyrics, really hear them, as clear as a bell for your first time. This happened to me when I was listening to That’s Pep from Freedom of Choice by DEVO a few months ago and was compelled look up the lyrics to verify what I heard.

The lyrics sound like something out of a Boy Scout handbook.

vigor vim vitality and punch
the ability to act on a sudden hunch
nerve to tackle the hardest thing
feet that climb and hands that cling
a heart that never forgets to sing
that’s pep (3 times)

sand and grit in a concrete base
a friendly smile on an honest face
a spirit that helps when another’s down
knows how to scatter the blackest frown
love’s it’s neighbor love’s it’s town
that’s pep (4 times)

say “i will” for you know you can
look for the best in every man
meet each thundering knockout blow
come back with a smile ’cause you know
you get the best of the whole damn show
that’s pep (6 times)
you know thats pep

That makes my day, any day. That’s pep!

The Persuaders

PBS aired this epsiode, The Persuaders, of Frontline almost a year ago. It is a fascinating look at the current state and science of marketing.

In part 4, Clotaire Rapaille discusses our reptillian hot buttons of desire. Rapaille has told SUV makers to tint their windows and beef up the size of their vehicles because the reptillian code for SUVs is domination.

In part 5, Frank Luntz studies an audience to reveal how is clients should frame an issue to align with the desires of the target audience. Mr Luntz’s approach is effective and one of the resources behind Karl Rove’s ability to effectively frame issues to align with his political objectives. His research was instrumental in re-framing the estate tax as the death tax.

You can order The Persuaders dvd from PBS or watch the entire episode online for free.
